Dr. Rosen: Sweeter Dreams Await & Good for You Grains

– by Dr. Michael Rosen, D.C.  BioVeda Health & Wellness Center of West Loop, IL Sweeter Dreams Await! It’s important to make an overall commitment to healthy, restorative sleep. Here are some tips from the Better Sleep Council for maintaining a healthy sleep cycle and ensuring the best night’s rest: Make sleep a priority by keeping a consistent sleep (bedtime) and wake schedule, including weekends Create a bedtime routine that is relaxing. Experts recommend reading a book, listening to soothing music or soaking in a hot bath. Transform your bedroom into a haven of comfort. Create a room that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool for the best possible sleep. Evaluate your mattress and pillow to ensure proper comfort and support. If your mattress is five to seven years old, it may be time for a new one. In general, pillows should be replaced every year. Keep work materials, computers and televisions out of the bedroom; it should be used for sleep and sex only. Exercise regularly, but complete workouts at least two hours before bedtime. If you sleep with a partner, your mattress should allow each of you enough space to move easily. Couples who’ve been sleeping on a “double” (full size) may think they have enough room, until they learn that each person has only as much sleeping space as a baby’s crib! Avoid nicotine (e.g., cigarettes, tobacco products). Used close to bedtime, it can lead to poor sleep. Avoid caffeine and alcohol (e.g., coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate) close to bedtime. It can keep you awake. Finish eating at least two to three hours before bedtime....

Phenolic Compounds as the Source of Allergic Response

– by Dr. Eric Herman, D.C. BioVeda Health & Wellness Center of Bethlehem What causes allergies and chemical sensitivities? Over the last decade, important breakthroughs have occurred in the identification and treatment of allergies. Dr. Robert Gardner, Ph.D. professor of nutrition at Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah), discovered that specific key chemical agents cause allergic reactions including hayfever. These naturally occurring chemical agents called “phenolic” (aromatic) compounds, are regularly found throughout our environment in thousands of items including most foods, pollen and chemicals. What is the relationship between allergies and asthma? Many forms of asthma are caused by allergic reactions from both airborne phenolic compounds and those found in foods. Asthmatic individuals can be helped in the same way as others suffering from allergies. Airborne phenolic compounds are often found in pollen, tobacco smoke, house dust, air pollution, kapok, wool, feathers, animal hair or dander, building materials, furniture stuffing, cottonseed, and chemical odors. Some examples of foods that are most likely to be factors associated with asthma are those eaten daily such as wheat, eggs, chocolate, corn, peanut butter, citrus fruits, potatoes and tomatoes. We have helped many people suffering from asthma by first testing for those phenolics and other agents that can cause or contribute to asthma. We then screen and treat allergies, if indicated, utilizing our clinics’ painless techniques. This treatment also helps strengthen the immune system. Do I have to restrict my diet to avoid allergies? Not usually. Since phenolics are found in so many foods and other materials, it would be virtually impossible through dietary restrictions to avoid the phenolics causing the reactions. For instance,...

Fish Oil and Alzheimer’s

Dr. James Augustine, D.C. – BioVeda of Cerritos, CA writes in response to the article published on CNN.com, Fish Oil Ingredient Doesn’t Slow Alzheimer’s, which explores a study that asserts that omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) does not slow mental decline once it’s began: Several points here: Isolating DHA from it’s food source never works, as most nutritional supplements have been synthesized in a lab, the active ingredient from the food removed and concentrated. This is given as a food supplement, but isolated, fractionated vitamins / minerals / amino acids do not work. It would be like breaking off a piece of your car key and attempting to start your car. No…you need the entire key and hence you need the entire vitamin as it occurs in food. Treating disease or preventing disease? Once a significant degenerative process has set in like Alzheimer’s, it takes a dramatic effort to reverse it and heal. Fish oil should be preventative, not a treatment for Alzheimer’s. What wasn’t discussed – toxicity levels that can cause degeneration in nervous system tissue. Also..the blood thinning effect that fish oil has, which therefore can improved blood flow to the brain. I wonder who funded the research? What was the agenda? “Ah…vitamins are a hoax…they don’t really affect the body” If that were the case, try to stop eating food for a week and see if you notice any differences in your health! Dr. Augustine,...

Is the Obesity Epidemic a Result of Our Stupidity?

The obesity epidemic is real.  In fact, it is estimated that by the year 2020, three out of four Americans will be obese.  This uncontrolled weight gain can be attributed to poor diet choices on a personal level, however can it also be said that the corporations and organizations that control our food are to blame?  What follows is an opinion piece from Justin Stoneman that appeared on HuffingtonPost.com.  What do you think?  Is America a big, fat, stupid nation? Is the obesity epidemic a result of corporate control over dietary recommendations? America: A Big, Fat, Stupid Nation – by Justin Stoneman America, I love you. Sure, you’ve had your naughty moments, but what country hasn’t? Ultimately, I believe your filthy, battered heart is in the right place. This particular Irishman gazes over the ocean, happy to dream your dream. Yet, the title staring down at you is said as ‘fact’. Disagree? OK, good, then let us begin… Latest figures confirm the ridiculous: three out of four of you will be ‘overweight or obese’ by 2020. To gauge perspective: there are now more ‘fat’ people than ‘white’ people in America. Perhaps our bigots of the future will swing their hatred away from ‘race’ to the slim and healthy. The shrinking minority are, indeed, the shrinking minority. Stupid? Welcome to a population who know less about what they put into their mouths than they do about, well, take your pick…celebrities or cars or American Idol or iPhones? Animals have the intelligence to know what to eat and to never get fat (except the ones fed by humans). Yet that simple...

Hypertension Solutions – Be In Control of Your Numbers, Naturally

– by Andrea Dobrich, D.C.  BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Harrisburg, NC Hypertension (high blood pressure) seems to be an ever evolving healthcare crisis in the U.S. This progressive disease is also known as “the silent killer” because there are not always noticeable symptoms associated with hypertension until it has been chronic and organs become diseased. High blood pressure can affect your blood vessels, heart, brain, kidneys and eyes. Chronic hypertension left untreated can lead to headaches, eye/vision damage, aneurysms, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke. However, there are a number of holistic approaches to effectively bring your numbers down naturally before resorting to prescription medications. Dietary approaches are recommended by both mainstream and integrative medical practitioners as a first-line approach to manage hypertension. A diet high in vegetables, fruits, and other nutritious foods that are rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium is suggested. People should also decrease saturated fats and replace them with foods high in monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids (like those found in fish.) Lifestyle changes that have been proven in eliminating hypertension and bringing your numbers into the normal range are exercising, quitting smoking, losing weight, chiropractic care, and using natural supplements (i.e. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, Garlic, Black Cohosh, Cayenne, Valerian Root and Kelp). Salt restriction is also necessary and should not exceed 2400 mg or 1 tsp per day. Chiropractic care is a gentle and natural therapy that has helped lower blood pressure to normal. As one Dobrich Chiropractic patient states, her systolic reading (top number) dropped from being in the high 150′s to now consistently being...

Nutritional Protection: Omega-3 Essential Fats (Part 2 of 3)

The following is the second of a three part series that comprises a white paper report on Nutritional Protection Against Excitotoxins.  In this series we explore the importance of nutrition in protecting the body and brain from harmful toxins and free radicals.  To read the complete report on Nutritional Protection, click to download. This is for reference only, all rights are reserved. Omega-3 Essential Fats: The majority of fats ingested in the American diet consist of what are known as omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This includes the essential fatty acids linoleic and linolenic acids, which are high in corn, cotton, soya, safflower, and sunflower oils. There is a popular trend that has been initiated by the American Heart Association, that promotes the use of polyunsaturate oils, there is growing evidence that these oils promote the generation of “bad” and “good” eicosanoids. In fact, there is great evidence that these oils may actually promote arteriosclerosis, and therefore, coronary artery disease and strokes. Omega 3-fatty acids are derived primarily from coldwater fish. When the diet consists of a high proportion of these oils the generation of of arachidonic acid is significantly reduced, thereby reducing the generation of “bad” eicosanoids. Experimental animal and human studies have both shown a significant reduction in blood coagulation and, hence, in the incidence of both strokes and heart attacks. We know that cell membranes are critical in receptor function, ion exchange, enzyme function, and nutrient entry into the cell. With aging, the cell membranes lose some of their fluidity and as a result these critical functions are impaired. It has been shown that omega 3-fatts...
