Top Health Searches Online

CNN recently reported in the article “Your top health searches, asked and answered” that many people look to the internet for answers about their health rather than seeing their physicians.  The article explores five of the most commonly searched conditions along with online resources for each, which follow below. While the article offers some valuable information about each condition, it’s important to remember that effective health care treats the patient, not the condition.  At BioVeda Health & Wellness Centers, our practitioners offer a patient-centered approach.  They take the time to get to know you and your complete health history, and get to the root of the cause of a condition, instead of just addressing the symptomatic expression.  In this manner, you get well and stay well.  Please contact us to learn more! CNN’s article offers links to resources for each condition that is commonly searched online, as follows: Herpes Herpes is No. 2 on Yahoo’s mobile list, and No. 10 on Google’s regular list. Is the Obesity Epidemic a Result of Our Stupidity?

The obesity epidemic is real.  In fact, it is estimated that by the year 2020, three out of four Americans will be obese.  This uncontrolled weight gain can be attributed to poor diet choices on a personal level, however can it also be said that the corporations and organizations that control our food are to blame?  What follows is an opinion piece from Justin Stoneman that appeared on HuffingtonPost.com.  What do you think?  Is America a big, fat, stupid nation? Is the obesity epidemic a result of corporate control over dietary recommendations? America: A Big, Fat, Stupid Nation – by Justin Stoneman America, I love you. Sure, you’ve had your naughty moments, but what country hasn’t? Ultimately, I believe your filthy, battered heart is in the right place. This particular Irishman gazes over the ocean, happy to dream your dream. Yet, the title staring down at you is said as ‘fact’. Disagree? OK, good, then let us begin… Latest figures confirm the ridiculous: three out of four of you will be ‘overweight or obese’ by 2020. To gauge perspective: there are now more ‘fat’ people than ‘white’ people in America. Perhaps our bigots of the future will swing their hatred away from ‘race’ to the slim and healthy. The shrinking minority are, indeed, the shrinking minority. Stupid? Welcome to a population who know less about what they put into their mouths than they do about, well, take your pick…celebrities or cars or American Idol or iPhones? Animals have the intelligence to know what to eat and to never get fat (except the ones fed by humans). Yet that simple...

Fertility and Chiropractic Care: A Natural Approach

– by Wendy Butler, D.C. BioVeda Health & Wellness Center of Albany, GA Thirty-five year old Tracy had tried everything: monitoring her cycles through body temperature, over-the-counter fertility predictors and finally, fertility-enhancing drugs and in vitro fertilization.  But after three years of trying, she still wasn’t pregnant. She began to think she was “too old” to have a family, though she was seemingly in great physical shape. Tracy is not alone.  Thousands of women go to fertility specialists each year.  “After fertility treatments fail many women are told ‘no’ [about having children] because of their age.”  But chiropractic may offer hope.  At least one recent study showed that, after receiving chiropractic care, previously infertile women were much more likely to become pregnant (Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, 2003).  And while reasons behind chiropractic’s success in treating infertility aren’t certain, there’s a number of possibilities why it may work. Proper alignment works in several ways to increase the likelihood of becoming and staying pregnant.  Chiefly, improper alignment of the cranial, spinal and  pelvic bones can hinder the nervous system, which controls a woman’s reproductive system, causing imbalances and hampering her ability to get and stay pregnant. Distortions of the sphenoid bone in the skull- which can result from passage through the birth canal or from accidents later in life- are particularly problematic, since misalignments there can affect the cranial nerve and pituitary gland.  The pituitary gland is the regulator of a number of hormones important to fertility, including the follicle-stimulating hormone, estrogen, and progesterone.  If any of these are out of balance, it can be very difficult to get pregnant. Like Tracy,...

Probiotics May Prevent and Shorten Duration of Cold Virus

A study “Probiotic Effects on Cold and Influenza-like Symptom Incidence and Duration in Children” published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that probiotics reduce symptoms and duration of colds and flu. The study involved 326 children ages 3-5 treated with either a placebo, a single or a combination of probiotics twice daily for 6 months. The probiotics used were Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, or L acidophilus NCFM in combination with Bifidobacteriumanimalis subsp lactis. Results indicated that the probiotics reduced the duration and incidence of fever, coughing, runny nose. The study concluded: “Daily dietary probiotic supplementation for 6 months was a safe effective way to reduce fever, rhinorrhea, and cough incidence and duration and antibiotic prescription incidence, as well as the number of missed school days attributable to illness, for children 3 to 5 years of age.” Researchers have also shown in some studies that probiotics can benefit those who are already ill with various conditions, and the bacteria are thought to boost the immune system’s response to invaders. In fact, one study carried out in Italy found that regular long-term intake of certain probiotics reduced the likelihood of respiratory infection during the cold season. Before you were born, your GI tract was sterile. The moment after your birth, the formation of bacteria began in your gut. The first ones to settle in were the immune-building ones from breast milk (in most cases), increasing your level of health and favoring your survival. In a way, we spend the rest of our lives “trashing” our digestion with bad things — like poor diet and other lifestyle choices that cause the wrong kind...

Sleep Deprivation Ends Here!

Studies show that many adults do not get the sleep that they need each night. Insomnia has gone from medical terminology to a commonly recognized layman’s word. So many people have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep each night that we are constantly being bombarded by commercials and advertisements for prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills. These sleep aid drugs can have several unwanted or dangerous side effects. Additionally, they can become addictive, you can build a tolerance to them, and they can actually cause your insomnia to become worse. People generally report needing to take more and more sleep aid drugs over time. We have seen a drastic increase in the number of people taking sleep drugs. People are having dangerous, disturbing and life-threatening side effects from drugs that we all thought were perfectly safe just a year ago. They build up a tolerance, become dependent, have withdrawal if they try to stop, and are looking for answers. They want to educate themselves on time-tested, natural sleep aids so that they can safely get the sleep that they need. The most recognized, natural sleep remedy is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone naturally made by your body. It has been tested time and time again showing no serious side effects for short-term use (up to three months). Negative long-term side effects have not been reported, but have not been tested much. The synthesis and release of melatonin are stimulated by darkness. Our eyes have specialized light-sensitive receptors that we use to determine how light or dark our surroundings are. These receptors then signal a cluster of nerves in the...
